Commercial fleet flat tire: reducing downtime

FlatFixVault tire guide · Published 2026-10-15

For a business, a flat tire costs more than the tire: a vehicle that is not working, a crew waiting, and a customer appointment at risk. Most of that downtime can be reduced with a few habits and a plan made before the flat happens.

Short answers

How can a fleet reduce flat tire downtime?

Check pressures on a schedule, keep the right spare and tools in each vehicle, record tire sizes and load ranges, and set up a tire account with a local shop before you need it.

Do work vans need special tires?

Many work vans and pickups use LT or C (commercial) tires with higher load ranges. Replacements should match the load range the vehicle calls for.

Can FlatFixVault set up a fleet account?

Yes. Request a fleet account on the fleets page; fleet pricing is quoted by phone.

Check pressures on a schedule

Underinflation is one of the most common reasons tires fail early and pick up damage. A short pressure check at the start of the week (with a gauge, when the tires are cold) catches slow leaks before they become flats. Set the pressures to the door placard or the load-range figure for how the vehicle is loaded. Our tire pressure guide explains where to find the number.

Keep each vehicle ready

Know your sizes and load ranges

Work vans and pickups often run LT (light truck) or C (commercial van) tires with a load range such as C, D or E. A replacement has to match what the vehicle calls for; a passenger tire of the same numbers is not equivalent. Keeping a simple list of each vehicle's size and load range avoids the wrong tire being fitted in a hurry. The tire size decoder reads any size, and our fleet tire planner estimates how many tires a fleet uses per year from your own numbers.

Keep simple records

Note the date, vehicle, tire position and cause each time a tire is repaired or replaced. Patterns show up after a few entries: one vehicle that keeps losing tires may have an alignment or loading problem; one route may have more debris. Recording the DOT date code on new tires also tells you when they are getting old (see the DOT date code).

Repair or replace on a work vehicle

The general rules for repairs apply to work vehicles too: a small puncture in the tread area is often repairable after the tire is inspected off the wheel, while sidewall damage, a tire driven flat, or a large cut usually means replacement. Work vehicles add two considerations. Heavily loaded vans and trucks put more stress on a repaired tire, so a borderline repair is less attractive; and matching tires on the same axle matters more when the vehicle carries weight. See flat tire: repair or replace? for the details.

What drivers should say on the first call

A clear first call saves time. Give drivers a short script: which vehicle it is, where it is (exit number or nearest cross street), whether it is safely off the road, which tire is flat, the tire size and load range from the glove box card, and whether there is a usable spare. With those details the shop can check stock and the person approving the work can decide while the driver waits somewhere safe.

Set up a tire account before you need it

When a flat happens, the slowest part is often finding a tire in the right size and arranging payment. A fleet account with a local shop settles that in advance: your vehicles and sizes are on file and the shop knows who can approve work. FlatFixVault offers fleet accounts for vans, pickups and work trucks at our Fort Lauderdale shop; fleet pricing is quoted by phone, and if a size is not on our racks we can usually source it from nearby warehouses the same day. Request a fleet account or call 954-760-7276 (Monday to Friday 8 AM to 5 PM, Saturday 8 AM to 2 PM).
